I am reading Hearing God's Voice, by Henry and Richard Blackaby. There is a part of the book that talks about how people say "God opened the door for..." Here is an excerpt from the book:
Many Christians base their decision-making on the "open door policy." If the door of opportunity opens, they take that as God's invitation to enter. For example, if someone is offered a promotion or a new job that includes a pay increase, they immediately assume God must be in it.
The problem with the open doors is that the emphasis is erroneously placed on the door rather than on God. Some people enter open doors under the mistaken assumption that God only allows good opportunities to come their way. Therefore, and good opportunity that comes along must be from God. Looking for open doors can appear easier than developing a relationship with God."
You can see the flaws with this logic, but I can honestly say that until I read this section of the book I had never really considered how I fall into this trap. The book goes on to say that some doors are open to distract us and others may appear closed but God is simply waiting to open them for us.
Often we limit our experiences with God to tangible results or the fulfillment of our desires; we lack the focus and understanding to actually have a true relationship with Him. In other words, we miss the mark. Is that door supposed to be open or is it really closed? - Only way to know is to have a relationship with God and align ourselves with His ways...
