1 Corinthians 3:10-15 “…each one should be careful how he builds. For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. If any man builds on his foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay, or straw, his work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality if each man’s work. If what he has built survives, he will receive his reward. If it is burned up, he will suffer loss; he himself will be saved, but only as one escaping through the flames.”
Paul wrote this when he was addressing divisions in the church and talking about the importance of each person’s role; one plants, one waters, but only God makes it grow. Today we are bombarded with a message telling us we need to get everything we can and we need to accumulate “things” in order to be successful. Unfortunately we have seen this message infect the churches too, but just as the early church we need to remind ourselves to inspect our foundation. Are we applying Biblical principles and teachings to our lives or are we making comfort based decisions based on our own desires? Do we choose to buy that new car or the more luxurious home, knowing that we really cannot afford it? During times of financial stress what is the first thing Christians cut out? – A tithe. God’s is supposed to come first but more often than not we give God what is left over, if anything, after we have fulfilled out wants and desires. What is your foundation?
