Romans 12:17-21 "Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everybody. If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God's wrath, for it is written: "It is mine to avenge. I will repay." says the Lord. On the contrary: "If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head." Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good."
This verse is very tough to apply. Everything in our being wants revenge for those who wrong us, but we want mercy when we are the offender. We all know someone that is just difficult to deal with, that just thinking about having to interact with them makes our teeth clinch. God calls us to live in peace with everyone - though there is a qualifier there "as far as it depends on you". We are to try to live at peace but some people are not going to allow it. That is when we must apply the first part of the passage, "do what is right in the eyes of everyone." As long as we are not allowing ourselves to be pulled down by the "game" we will be much better for it. Besides God will enact His justice as He sees fit. So it may seem like there is no reward in "taking the high road," but then again where would you rather have your rewards, here or heaven?
