John 14:9-12 "As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father's commands and remain in his love. I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you."
The world is full of quick fixes, temporary distractions that bring a empty joy to our lives. Eventually the joy wears off and we need something more to simply fill the void we feel in our lives. These distractions come in many different packages, drugs, alcohol, sex, work, money, etc - no matter the specific vice we choose they all eventually wear off and we are left needing more. What we usually fail to realize is that each time we choose these temporary solutions we bring more damage to ourselves and pushing us farther from a true sense of joy.
God designed people to need something beyond ourselves to make us whole. We were not created to be alone, we are social by design. The world wants to keep us isolated and distracted by instant gratification so we will not obtain our true calling. If you find yourself sliding down a slope, constantly need more to just make it through the day - take a step back and look at your life. God has a plan for you and can provide you a joy that is beyond our comprehension - do not let people that profess to be "Christians" taint your image of God, take the time to develop a personal relationship with him - it will change your life.
