Psalm 32:1-5 "Blessed is he whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered. Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord does not count against him and in whose spirit is no deceit. When I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. For day and night your hand was heavy upon me; my strength was sapped as in the heat of summer. Then I acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity. I said, 'I will confess my transgressions to the Lord'- and you forgave the guilt of my sin."
Holding on to sin and distancing ourselves from God is equated to our bones decaying. We are robbed of our energy as we wrestle with the guilt, all of our resources are invested in this internal struggle. Though once we confess our sins and are forgiven we are renewed and our spirits are healed.
There is a very key part of these verses that may be overlooked, the part where it speaks of "deceit". Our confessions must be genuine, not simply a rehearsed or scripted banter - "Pray this prayer when you have done this....don't forget to say you are sorry X number of times..." God looks for sincerity in our confessions, He weighs our hearts and our desire to change. This is not to say that we will never sin again or that we will never commit the same sin, but the more honest our confession is the more God can change our hearts.
If we allow Him, God will continually change our hearts so that they align with His own. Through this process our hearts are softened and we are drawn closer to Him. Confession is the key.
